Nine Custom Furniture Ideas That Make a Small Condo Feel Twice the Size
· 7 minute read
Half our residential work now happens in condos under 900 square feet. These nine ideas come up again and again because they work — not in renders, but in homes we've revisited years later.
1. The platform bed that swallows a wardrobe
Raise the bed 30–40cm on a storage platform and you gain six large drawers plus a lift-up compartment — roughly the capacity of a two-door wardrobe, invisible under the mattress.
2. A fold-down desk that disappears at dinner time
Wall-mounted, drops flat in two seconds, holds a laptop and monitor when open. The trick is building the cable tray into the wall panel so nothing dangles when it folds.
3. Bay-window seats with lift-up lids
Developers give you the bay window; we give it a purpose. Cushioned seat on top, deep storage below, and suddenly the awkward ledge is the most fought-over spot in the house.
4. Full-height shallow cabinets
A 25cm-deep cabinet running floor to ceiling stores more than most deep wardrobes — because everything sits in one visible layer. Ideal for corridors too narrow for standard furniture.
5. The TV wall that hides the household
Router, consoles, files, vacuum cleaner — a well-planned media wall conceals all of it behind flush doors, with ventilation slots where the electronics breathe.
6. Banquette dining against the wall
A wall bench with storage under the seat replaces two chairs' worth of clearance. Add a table sized to slide, and the dining corner seats five in the footprint of three.
7. Sliding doors, everywhere a hinge would collide
Wardrobes beside beds, bathrooms off narrow halls — each swapped hinge recovers up to half a square metre of usable floor.
8. The over-doorway library
The 40cm above every door frame is free real estate. A continuous shelf around the room's perimeter holds a surprising number of books without costing a single centimetre of floor.
9. Mirror-front storage that doubles the light
A mirrored wardrobe opposite the window bounces daylight deep into the unit. Storage plus brightness in one panel — the cheapest square metres you'll ever add.
Start with the floor plan, not the furniture
Every one of these ideas depends on your actual dimensions, window positions and how you live. That's the whole point of custom. Send us your floor plan through the contact page and we'll tell you which of the nine your unit is hiding.
